Marylebone’s Location and History

Marylebone lies in the heart of London; it’s part of the City of Westminster and includes part of the West End, while Oxford Street – the famed shopping street – forms its southern boundary.

The name Marylebone can be traced back as far as the 12th century, when the parish’s church – St Mary’s – was built on the bank of a small stream or bourne. Over the years, ‘Marybourne’ became ‘Marylebone’. The original place of worship has long since been demolished; however, the current parish church, which was built in the early 19th century, can be found (appropriately) on Marylebone Road.

Marylebone also boasts a number of famous streets, built on a grid pattern. These include Harley Street, which is famed for its private medical clinics; Baker Street (where the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes lived); and Portland Place, home of the BBC’s Broadcasting House.

Other famous attractions which lie within Marylebone’s boundaries include Madame Tussaud’s waxworks (also on Marylebone Road); part of Regent’s Park; and the Wallace Collection, a fine art museum in Manchester Square.
