How to Look After Your Boiler (and Who to Call If It Goes Wrong)

10 Feb 2024

How to look after your boiler this winter

Your boiler is one of the most important appliances in your home, providing heating and hot water on demand. But like all appliances, it needs regular maintenance and care to keep it running smoothly and efficiently. By following these simple tips, you can help to prolong the life of your boiler and avoid costly repairs.

1. Get your boiler serviced annually

This is the best way to identify and fix any potential problems before they cause a breakdown. A “Gas Safe” qualified engineer will check all of the components of your boiler and make sure that it is operating safely and efficiently.

2. Check the boiler pressure regularly

The ideal boiler pressure is between 1 and 1.5 bar. If the pressure drops below this, it can cause your boiler to overheat and shut down. You can check the pressure by looking at the pressure gauge on the front of your boiler. If the pressure is low, you can top it up using the filling loop.

3. Bleed your radiators regularly

Over time, air can build up in your radiators, which can reduce their efficiency. To bleed your radiators, you will need a radiator key. Simply turn the key on the bleed valve until you hear air escaping. Once the air has stopped escaping, close the valve tightly.

4. Keep the area around your boiler clear

Your boiler needs good ventilation to operate safely. Make sure that there are no obstructions around the boiler and that the flue pipe is clear.

5. Use a good quality inhibitor

A boiler inhibitor is a chemical that helps to protect your boiler from corrosion and scale buildup. You can add inhibitor to your boiler yourself or ask a qualified engineer to do it for you.

What to do if your boiler goes wrong

If your boiler does go wrong, it is important to call a qualified engineer immediately. Do not attempt to repair the boiler yourself, as this could be dangerous.

Here are some additional tips for looking after your boiler:

  • Avoid using harsh chemicals to clean your boiler. This can damage the surfaces and components.
  • If you have a power cut, turn off your boiler at the mains. This will help to prevent damage to the boiler when the power comes back on.
  • If you are going away on holiday for a long period of time, it is a good idea to turn off your boiler and central heating. This will save energy and reduce the risk of problems while you are away.

By following these tips, you can help to keep your boiler in good condition for many years to come.
